Book 1 of The Malloreon: Guardians of the West
by David Eddings
The Malloreon: Guardians of the West by David Eddings is a book about Garion and his wife, Ce’Nedra. They have a baby boy, then someone abducts the baby, and Garion and Ce’Nedra want their baby back. So they go out with their friends and armies to find who took their baby and where he is.
I will talk about before, during, and after Ce’Nedra’s pregnancy, I will also talk about the abduction, and how they are searching for the baby (in that order).
Garion and his wife Ce’Nedra found out that she could not have children. So they called Garion’s aunt Polgara for help. When she came, she had Ce’Nedra’s cousin Xera with her. The three of them acted suspiciously for a few months, and Garion had no idea what they were up to.
One early morning, Garion was having an excellent dream when he woke up from his wife springing out of bed, and dashing to the bathroom where she was noisily sick. Garion sprang out of bed to see what was the matter with his wife, and after a brief discussion, she said, “You’re going to be a father. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll throw up again.”
A few days later, Ce’Nedra had their first child, Geran (they named him after Garion’s father). Garion thought that Ce’Nedra was being a little too overprotective of their baby, because one night when Ce’Nedra was very tired, Garion offered to put Geran in his crib, but she refused and said that she wanted her baby to be placed safely in his crib.
A voice would talk to Ce’Nedra in the night, when she was sleeping, and once persuaded her to bury her baby under lots of blankets so that nobody could find him and he would be safe. Thankfully, Garion’s aunt’s mother, Poldara, was there to stop Ce’Nedra before she smothered her baby (though it took a short conversation to convince her).
One day, when Garion was out doing king stuff and Ce’Nedra was downstairs while their baby was upstairs in the royal apartment taking a nap at the Rivan Citadel. When she went upstairs to check on her baby, she found out that their baby was gone. She started to panic, and while she was panicking, she contacted Garion to tell him to come home fast because their son was gone.
Garion went home as soon as possible, and when he got there, Ce’Nedra ran to him, and started to cry on his chest, and he did his best to soothe her. A little while later, Garion gathered some people to have a meeting.
Garion, Ce’Nedra, Polgara, Belgarath, and many more people went out to search for the prince. They had to overcome many different and challenging obstacles, for example, they had to fight people, and the people trying to stop or slow down Garion and his army, and they had a lot more warriors than Garion did. While Garion and his army were fighting the opponents, Garion was still waiting for one of his friends to bring in more reinforcements.
Book 1 of The Malloreon: Guardians of the West by David Eddings is one of my favorite books. I love how the characters are nice, caring, loving, and especially funny, while they are more serious during some parts of the book.
To me, being funny in life is essential because if there is no humor, then life can be challenging and more serious than I think it has to be. There is nothing that I did not like about the book. So far, this is my favorite series that I have read. I definitely recommend this book and the series (The Belgariad and The Malloreon) to everyone ages 10 and up.
