That Time I Faced My Fear and Won.

Facing My Fear at Glenwood Caverns

One thing I was scared to try was the giant swing on top of the mountain. It is called “The Giant Canyon Swing” at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park.

I kept telling my stepdad Tim my wrist hurt, and even though it did, I used it as an excuse so I would not have to ride the swing. After we rode almost everything we wanted to ride, my stepdad told me how much fun I would have and how much I would enjoy riding the swing.

There was a small part of me that knew he was right.

I started walking to the swing with my stepdad, and my belly had a nervous sensation. When we got to the swing, I pulled the red bar across my lap, and the guy who worked there assured me that the bar was secure. He said all the rules, went behind the controls, and pushed the button, and before I knew it, we were off.

As we went up, I closed my eyes and then slowly opened them. I looked between my legs thousands of feet down and saw the freeway and the Colorado River. I quickly sat back, had my eyes wide open, and said in a shaky voice, “Oh my gosh!”

When we got off the ride, I immediately knew we had to get back in the line. After we rode it once, we rode it again and again, fifteen to twenty times in a row. The last time we got off the swing, it felt like I would throw up; thankfully, I didn’t.

Since then, I have talked about the swing more times than I can count, and can’t wait for the next time I ride it. I am so glad my stepdad told me how much I would enjoy the swing.

Fun Facts

The swing goes up to 50 miles an hour!

If you sit on a specific side of the swing, you can look down in the canyon THREE THOUSAND FEET DOWN; and when you look between your legs, you can see the freeway and the Colorado River!
